The theme for Safer internet Day 2013 was ‘Online rights & responsibilities’, encouraging all users of technology – and particularly children and young people – to ‘Connect with respect’.
The day was celebrated in over 100 countries around the world. Over 10 million participants and over 16,150 schools took part of the event! There were over 15,900 tweets of the #SID2013 hashtag on 5 February 2013, with the hashtag ‘trending’ several times worldwide during the day.
There were many activities were young people were invited to be active participants across Europe and beyond. See below a few examples:
Bulgaria: TeeNET Parliament’13
The event took place in the building of the Bulgarian Parliament and focused on encouraging youth participation and self-regulation. During the event, ten teen delegates from across the country, who had been selected through a public voting process on Facebook, presented and debated ten rights to be included in the first-of-its-kind ‘Charter of the Online Rights of the Young People in Bulgaria’.
The UK’s largest ever study of young people’s attitudes towards online rights and responsibilities. The survey was designed to help understanding children and young people’s online experiences.
Young people can achieve great things through the internet. The competition winners included a 14-year-old app developer. Winners continue to work with us helping to ensure that the voice of youth is heard in the ‘better internet’ agenda.
Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised by Insafe in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.
